Organise

There is no such thing as being over organised. Backpacking holidays are all about travelling on a budget, being a budget means you have a limited amount of time. That’s why it’s so important that you do your research before you begin your holiday. This doesn’t mean you need to have a detailed schedule printed out and ready to follow. It does mean that you have some ideas in mind of what you would like to do and see when you reach your destinations. Have back up plans too, better safe than sorry.

Belongings

You’ve checked into your hostel or hotel and now it’s time to explore. You don’t need to take your entire backpack with you but there are a few essentials that you should keep on your person at all times. When you leave your room you need to assume that worst could happen. Keep your passport close by and your money. It’s all about being a smart traveller.

Stay in touch

When you are on holiday you can get quite caught up with your adventures, don’t forget about your loved ones at home. They want to know that you’re safe and sound and most likely want a sneak peek into what stories they can expect to hear from you in full detail when you return. Understandably it can be hard to constantly stay in touch when backpacking but try to take advantage of opportunities that pop up. It’s more than likely that the hostels or hotels that you are staying in will have internet access and a computer for you to access it on. It won’t cost you and arm or a leg and it will give your loved ones peace of mind. Don’t you want to hear that everyone at home is well too? If you want to send a memento from where you are pick up some cheap post cards. Write a short message about your adventures so far, it will let your loved ones know you are thinking of them and show you have gone the extra mile to keep in touch.

Most importantly have fun! Travelling is all about experiencing new cultures and places. Therefore, don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. You’ll only regret the things you didn’t experience. Live in the moment and appreciate every moment.
